White student unions are reportedly being created at universities across Australia. The unions claim to support white students, which they say have been marginalized.
Seven of the unofficial unions popped up in the last week of November at the University of Queensland, University of Southern Queensland, Macquarie University, Western Sydney University, University of NSW, University of Western Australia and University of Technology, Sydney, notes News.com.au.
The question has been raised if these are legitimate student unions, or online farcical unions created by Internet trolls who hang out at right-wing social media sites such as 4chan and 8chan.
Snopes.com noted on Nov. 24 that white student unions formed on social media pages in the U.S. were probably all fake. The myth-busting site cited an article by The Daily Stormer, a reportedly racist website, which instructed readers to "Make more of these White Student Union pages on Facebook for various universities. You don’t have to go there. Make one for Dartmouth, Princeton, etc."
The site told readers to "Go, do it now. If they won’t let it on Facebook, put it on tumblr or wordpress or whatever. Get it up, then forward links to the local media."
In Australia, some of the universities have worked to distance themselves from the white student unions.
Macquarie University wrote on the Macquarie University White Student Union Facebook page on Nov. 29: "Replace the cover photo of the Macquarie University Library, as you do not have permission to use this image," and "Refrain from referring to yourselves as 'a student organization at Macquarie University' including the removal of 'Macquarie University' from your page name."
The Macquarie University White Student Union replied on the same day: "We will do no such thing. You're probably old enough to remember the 60s. This is like then except we're the radicals now, and you are the boring old establishment."
A spokesman for the White Students Union at the Western Sydney University told the News.com.au that the group had membership “into the double digits” and is “not out to antagonize anyone."
The spokesman added that the white student union has six committee members and is working to “advance our interests as white students and promote a safe space where we can come together as a community and organize."
“We’re a genuine group, we’re not doing it to troll anyone,” the spokesman insisted.
“If you roll up to any university these days you’ll have gay safe spaces, Muslim safe spaces: in the last four or five years it’s become very politically correct," the spokesman opined. “That’s great. I’m as PC as they come. We’re staying within the narrative. All we want is equality.”
