An Indian woman cut off her brother-in-law's penis with a sickle during an alleged assault and brought it to police as evidence.
The 32-year-old woman walked into a police station in the Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, India, around 6 a.m. on Feb. 11 and handed over the dismembered organ. She was accompanied by her three children, according to the Times of India.
The woman was reportedly living with her brother-in-law in Madhya Pradesh while her husband worked many miles away in Nashik. She claimed her relative had been sexually assaulting her for several days leading up to the incident.
She told police that when he forced himself on her again, she faked consent and then severed his genitals with a sickle as he was assaulting her.
The man reportedly committed suicide before police could get him medical attention. His body was found hanging from a tree near his house.
Sidhi police officer Abid Khan told the Times of India that the woman is being charged with attempted murder.
"This is a rare case and has to be investigated for a proper charge sheet," he said.
According to police, the woman is mentally stable and does not regret her actions.
The rape of women and girls is a widespread problem in India.
In November 2013, four men were sentenced to death in an Indian court for the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman in New Delhi, the Huffington Post reported at the time.
The men were accused of sexually assaulting, torturing, and beating the 23-year-old victim after luring her and a male friend onto a private bus that they were driving. The woman died of her injuries in a Singapore hospital two days later.
