Was Selena Gomez Banned From China?

Pop singer Selena Gomez announced April 16 that she would be performing concerts August 6 and 8 in China, but recently removed the shows in Guangzhou and Shanghai from her website tour dates.

According to, Gomez appeared with the Dalai Lama in Canada in 2014 during We Day, an event to empower young people in various cities.

Shady Music Facts retweeted a picture (above) of Gomez with the Buddhist leader at the event on April 18, 2016, with the caption: "Due to this image of her & the Dalai Llama. Selena Gomez has been BANNED from China. Her shows there are cancelled."

When Gomez originally tweeted the image, she included the caption: "words of wisdom. #speechless," notes

Neither Gomez nor the Chinese government has confirmed that the cancelations were due to the Dalai Lama picture, but Bon Jovi had a tour in the country that was reportedly axed in September 2015 because of a Dalai Lama picture from 2010.

According to, Maroon 5 also had Chinese shows canceled in 2015 after band member Jesse Carmichael tweeted the Dalai Lama on his birthday.

The news site notes that Gomez canceled two shows in Russia in 2013 after its government turned down her visa application, possibly because the Putin government was worried she might speak out against their anti-gay laws.

In more normal Gomez news, reports that the singer is "over" her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, maybe for the last time.

"Selena in her never-ending back and forth with Justin is now over him again," an unidentified source told the gossip site. "She doesn’t really want to deal with him right now and is now focused on her tour and career."

Bieber reportedly upset Gomez when he sneaked his other ex, Hailey Baldwin, into the iHeartRadio Music Awards April 3.
