A 19-year-old woman was stabbed in the wrist and abdomen in France by a mentally ill assailant who reportedly told police he heard voices ordering him to "commit a sacrifice" for Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.
The attack is believed to have taken place outside of Rennes, near the Lycee Chateaubriand, where the victim studied, reported Express. Her wounds were not life-threatening and she was taken to the hospital, where she is recovering.
The suspect, 32, was known by locals to have psychiatric issues.
"Voices told him that he must commit a sacrifice on the occasion of Ramadan," said prosecutor Nicolas Jacquet, according to the Daily Star.
Jacquet added that the suspect had “already made several stays in psychiatric hospitals” and after his arrest, was sent to a psychiatric facility.
When the suspect attacked the victim, he stabbed her three times before bystanders intervened and overpowered him.
Although this attack does not appear to have any link to terrorism, it reminded many in France of the deadly attack that occurred one day prior. In that case, Larossi Abballa, a 25-year-old jihadi known to French authorities, killed two police officers before he was killed by police.
Abballa, who had been sent to prison in 2013 for recruiting jihadis, told police during the confrontation that he pledged allegiance to ISIS, according to NBC News.
