A U.K. teen was horrified when she discovered a massive albino snake on top of her bathroom radiator.
Hannah Brierley, 16, noticed the 6-foot-long northern pine snake on a rug that was hanging over the radiator, The Telegraph reports. Brierly says she initially thought her mother was playing a prank on her, but as soon as she noticed the snake moving, she knew it wasn’t a joke.
Brierley reportedly called for her mother, 40-year-old Karen Marriott, and the two first attempted to call the RSPCA to no avail. Terrified, the mother and daughter called emergency services to come help them remove the massive snake.
“Hannah was calm at first. She can't even deal with spiders, but I don't think she thought it was real,” Marriott explained, according to the Daily Mail. “She'd been looking at it for a few minutes until it moved. She thought I was having a joke. I felt like a wally dialling [sic] 999 but I didn't know what to do. I'm frightened because I don't know how it got in. It was like something out of a film. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Everybody needed a wee, but we couldn't go.”
Eventually, emergency responders arrived, along with local detective Craig Wallace, to wrangle the snake. Wallace was able to use a pillowcase to capture it before bringing back to the station and eventually to the RSPCA.
“I keep snakes so I know a lot about them. It was a northern pine snake. They can give a nasty bite, but they're not venomous,” Wallace explained. “If it did bite you, you would struggle to get it off. I put my hand through a pillow slip then got the back of it's head and wrapped it up.”
Wallace says the snake was likely a family pet that got loose and snuck into Brierley’s window.
“It's been a nice few days with people leaving doors and windows open,” Wallace noted. “It isn't uncommon for them to go through the loft space or floorboards. I wanted to keep it as a station pet, but no-one would sit near me.”
