A Brazilian tattoo artist has been arrested after he tattooed a 17-year-old boy's forehead with the words "I am a thief" as punishment for allegedly trying to steal a disabled man's bicycle (video below).
Maycon Wesley and his friend Ronildo Moreira de Araujo have been charged with torture after Wesley tattooed the boy's forehead while Araujo recorded it, the Daily Mail reported.
Wesley wrote "Eu sou ladrao e vacilao" on the boy's forehead, which translates to "I am a thief and a loser." He tattooed the teen after he allegedly stole a bicycle from a man who had just one leg.
But the boy told a local newspaper that he was "very drunk" and had just fallen over the bicycle, BBC reported. He denied trying to steal the bike.
Wesley and Araujo reportedly cornered the teen, tied his hands and feet, sat him down on a chair and began tattooing him.
"I asked them to make the tattoo on my arm but they said they would do it on my forehead and started laughing," the boy told the local newspaper. "I begged them to break my arms and legs instead."
In the video, the teen appears frightened as Wesley tattoos his forehead. At one point, the man filming is heard laughing and says, "It's going to hurt." The suspects also cut the teen's hair after he tried hiding the ink.
Video of the incident was posted online June 9. His family told authorities the boy had been missing since May 31, and recognized him when they saw the clip.
Police arrested Wesley and Araujo. They admitted to tattooing the teen to police, but added that they released him afterwards and did not know of his whereabouts. Police did not confirm whether an actual robbery had taken place.
The boy's family said the teen has mental health issues and is a drug user. He was finally reunited with his family June 11, according to reports.
An online campaign was launched to help raise money so that the teen could have the tattoo removed. The campaign has already raised more than $5,800.
Reactions among social media users were mixed, although most agreed the suspects went too far.
"Too much punishment for a young kid. I may say it's wrong," wrote one Youtube user.
"Agree with you. he have no right to torture him in this way. he should be punished," wrote another.
"Too much punishment? Some will have killed him for his crime!" another commenter added.
