Pir Arrested After Failing To Bring Man Back To Life

A fake spiritual healer was arrested in Pakistan after he allegedly killed a follower, promising he could perform a "miracle" and bring him back to life.

According to a Saddar police spokesman, Muhammad Sabir, a pir from the village of Mubarakabad in Bahawalnagar, was arrested after killing one of his own followers.

The pir became popular in his village over the past five years due to his ability to perform “miracles.”

The pir told villagers he was able to bring a dead man back to life, but specified that the victim must be married and have children, reports The Express Tribune.

Muhammad Niaz, 40, a father of six, volunteered to be the subject of the experiment.

Niaz was placed on a table with his hands and legs tied. Sabir then cut his throat while bystanders watched.

Police were immediately called to the scene but by the time they arrived, it was too late. Niaz had died.

Witnesses say Sabir attempted to bring him back from the dead, but when he realized his “miracle” wasn't going to work, he attempted to flee the scene.

The pir was held by villagers and handed over to police.

Villagers told police the pir, a type of Sufi master, had also previously sacrificed animals and poured their blood on his followers to shield them from evil spirits.

A complaint against Sabir was filed with the police in Saddar. Niaz’s body was taken to a hospital for an autopsy, but was later released to the family for burial.

Samina, the sister of the victim, told The Express Tribune that her brother had sacrificed himself for the spiritual leader and that he will be rewarded for his sacrifice.

“Why should I mourn when I know that my brother is in heaven?” she said. “He will be rewarded for his services for the spiritual leader in afterlife."

Samina said the pir should not have been punished for his actions because her brother had volunteered his own life for the sake of the miracle.

According to Patheos, Sufism is a mystical form of Islam, described as a journey “towards the Truth, by means of love and devotion ... towards the perfection which all are truly seeking.”
