Rudy Guelord Bhebey Nde, a soccer player for the AC Leopards, took a brutal fall during a match last Saturday (video below).
Nde collided with goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shenawy, of Egypt's Zamalek team, flew into the air and landed on his head, notes the BBC.
Nde had to be driven off the field and missed the rest of the Confederation Cup Group B match.
Nde was taken to a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he is in serious condition.
According to AFP, Dr. Salah Abdel-Khalek told an Egyptian radio station earlier this week:
The footballer had serious damage to his spinal column between the fifth and sixth vertebrae, a blow to the spinal cord, breathing difficulties and brain bleeding, but the surgery was successful.
He will remain in intensive care for two days, where he is currently using a ventilator.
Zamalek won the match 2-0, and is going to pay for Nde's medical bills. Some of the Zamalek players have visited Nde in the hospital.
