Over 3,000 UK Police Investigated For Assault, 98% On Duty

While police violence continues to make headlines in the U.S., there are reportedly 3,082 police officers in the U.K. being investigated for assault.

The Independent cites records (obtained via a Freedom of Information request) that also show "[w]ith only two per cent being suspended, most of the police officers under investigation for violence against members of the public are still on the beat."

About half of the cops under investigation work for the Metropolitan Police (London area) and West Midlands Police (county in western central England).

About 55 percent of people who have complained about police brutality in London are minorities, even though they make up about 33 percent of the population. notes there nearly 31,000 police officers who work for the Metropolitan Police.

In the West Midlands, almost half the police brutality complaints come from black or Asian people, who only make up 14 percent of the population.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police told The Independent:

The MPS treats each occasion when an allegation is made about a member of its staff extremely seriously and will fully investigate each incident. Where the conduct of staff is proven to have fallen below the standards of behavior expected, the MPS will take robust action to ensure that its staff are appropriately disciplined and that lessons are learnt.

The Commissioner has recognized that there remains a risk that the MPS is still institutionally racist in some of what it does because there remain elements of disproportionality, despite significant progress over many years.

The West Midlands Police have not commented.
