Senay Guzel, 62, was charged for throwing her plastic slippers at her 38-year-old son, Hasan, on May 13 in Denizli, Turkey.
If Senay is convicted of "attempting to cause deliberately light injury," she could go to prison for two to five years, notes the Hurriyet Daily News.
The mother and son lived on different floors of the same apartment when an argument broke out.
Hasan reportedly shouted at Senay, and she threw her plastic slippers, which missed her son.
Even though he was not injured, Hasan filed a police complaint against his mother. A prosecutor started an investigation, and came up with criminal charges based upon the notion that the plastic slippers could be considered offensive weapons.
Senay said she had no idea that her slippers were weapons:
I threw my slipper because my son insulted me. It didn’t even hit him. If I had known that slippers count as weapons, I wouldn’t have thrown them. And so what if this slipper hit someone? It wouldn’t even hurt. Is there any mother who does not throw slippers at her child when she’s angry at them?
Hasan Ozan Orpak, the elderly woman's lawyer, added: "From now on, mothers should think twice before throwing slippers. We don’t know if every slipper-throwing mother will be tried now. But if a complaint is filed, why not? These mothers may be sentenced to prison from two to five years."
While the Turkish legal system has cracked down on this mom, thousands of rapists and abusers have avoided jail by marrying their victims, according to an official of Turkey's Supreme Court, noted The Independent in July.
Mustafa Demirdag, who heads a department in the Supreme Court that oversees sexual crimes, said that 3,000 of these types of nuptials had taken place, reported the Turkish news website Milliyet.
Demirdag told a parliamentary commission that these sham marriages have affected adult and child victims as young as five years old.
"That type of marriage is not acceptable," Demirdag stated. "It is cruel to force someone to marry a person she does not want [to marry] and force her to spend the rest of her life with him."
