Assassination Attempt On Expert Investigating MH17

A Ukrainian forensic expert involved in the investigation into the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in July 2014 was reportedly the target of an assassination attempt in November 2015.

The Boeing 777 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile, causing the deaths of all 298 people on board, reports.

Oleksandr Ruvin was due to attend a meeting in the Netherlands Nov. 23, 2015. At that meeting Ruvin planned "to make a final report on the circumstances and causes of the Boeing 777 crash" and "announce the findings of Ukrainian experts, submit the materials of the research by Ukrainian experts," Chief Military Prosecutor of Ukraine Anatoly Matios told the media April 11, according to Interfax.

"Five days prior to this, head of the expert group Ruvin was attacked in the evening of November 18, 2015 as he was returning from a regular meeting of experts during the preparations for the international meeting," Matios added.

Ruvin was shot in the leg but recovered following hospital treatment, notes.

Police have now arrested a suspect in the attack; details about the man’s identity have not been provided so far.

A report released in October 2015 confirmed that the plane was shot down by a Russian-built Buk missile, but an investigation being led by the Netherlands has yet to announce its final conclusion as to who fired it and where it was fired from.

The report also raised concerns that the body of the pilot may have been tampered with before being handed over to investigators. Pieces of shrapnel were allegedly removed before the body was made available to the team.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov accused the Dutch-led investigation of being biased.

A further report from the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) is expected later in 2016.

The JIT has postponed the release of its report on a number of occasions, according to RT. The process of identifying who was to blame is proving controversial, with western governments blaming Russia and separatist rebels who occupy eastern Ukraine.

In the lead-up to the downing of the aircraft, fierce fighting was taking place in the region between the rebels and Ukrainian government forces.

The Russian government has denied any involvement in firing the missile, and a comprehensive report to back up the allegation that Moscow was involved has yet to be produced.
