Jail For Man Who Dangled Baby From High-Rise (Photo)

A man in Algiers, Algeria, was recently sentenced to two years in prison for dangling a baby off a high-rise apartment building to get "likes" on Facebook.

The man dangled the baby from a 15th-floor window, and added a dark caption to the picture: "1,000 likes or I will drop him," reports Al Arabiya.

The picture stirred outrage on Facebook, notes Albawaba, with one user noting: "What is most striking is that it appears that the father is carrying his son with his left hand while using his right hand to take the picture, this means the picture is more important than the child's life."

"Such images and actions must not be tolerated, especially in our Algerian society, where crime is rampant," Noura Rahmani, a psychologist, told The New Arab, reports Albawaba.

"The father is unaware of the magnitude of this heinous act which he has committed," Rahmani added. "In the future, the child may suffer from episodic fits resulting the fear he endured in this act."

The man is not the father of the child, but is reportedly a relative.

He was arrested on June 18, and charged with endangering the baby's safety, notes BBC News.

According to Ennahar TV, the man denied that he placed the baby at risk and insisted that the picture had been altered by people on social media: "The picture was taken in a balcony with protective barriers. These were removed."

The baby's father reportedly asked the court to forgive the man for supposedly playing a game, but the judge said the child's life was in danger and the picture was clear.

Many Algerians were happy that the man was arrested and sentenced to jail, according to BBC News.

The Mirror ran the story, and received many shocked comments:

What is wrong with some people today?? Why can't they love and adore and most of all keep their kids safe!!! ... makes me sick!

A couple of blokes should dangle him over for 1million likes.

[I] seem to remember michael jackson doing similar.

I consider myself fortunate that I have never been taken in by the monstrosity that is Facebook. Do people have nothing better to do with their time than "do you like this picture of my cat?" It's pathetic really people, you should get what's called a real life.

The man "from Algeria" tells you all you need to know.

That child should never be allowed in a room with that freak again.

Facebook is a criminal website. It should be closed.
