A new video from the Islamic State shows an unmasked executioner cutting off an alleged spy’s right hand and left foot with a sword while he is tied to a cross.
The four-minute video, called “Deterrence of the Spies 1,” begins with a masked militant addressing the charges brought against the prisoner. The alleged spy is then shown and interrogated, apparently confessing to his crimes against the Islamic State.
A quote from the Quran appears immediately after the prisoner’s confession: “The penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His messenger... is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides of that they be exiled from the land,” reports the Daily Mail.
A guard is then shown escorting the prisoner, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, to the cross. Finally, a militant with a sword hacks off the man's hand and foot. The camera slowly zooms in to the body of the prisoner on the cross.
Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi, a research fellow at the Middle East Forum, told the Daily Mail the terrorist on video claims that the man would hold daily secret meetings with members of the Kurdish military in the desert.
Al-Tamimi also said four other spies are due to be tried and executed by the Islamic State, according to the militant on video.
The video comes after a June 16 takeover of a strategic Syrian border town from the Islamic State by Kurdish intelligence, reported by The New York Times.
