Indonesian Man Survives Flight In Airliner's Landing Gear

Mario Ambarita, 21, recently rode in the wheel well of an airliner for almost two hours.

Ambarita survived frigid temperatures and thin air during his high-altitude flight from Sumatra to Jakarta in Indonesia on Tuesday.

Ambarita was seen staggering on a tarmac after the Garuda Indonesia plane landed. He was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, and then spent the night in jail.

"The case was quite a surprise to us," Garuda Indonesia CEO Arif Wibowo told Reuters.

According to a spokesperson for Soekarno-Hatta airport police, Ambarita made the trip because he wanted to meet Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Ambarita reportedly planned his trip for a year by studying the airliner's departures and landings, and by reading up on the Internet on how to stowaway in the landing gear.

Ambarita's tearful mother, Tiar Sitanggan, told ABC.net.au that she "had no idea" her son was going to attempt the bizarre trip.
