A survey measuring the global perception of 50 nations found that Germany enjoys the best reputation in 2017. The U.S. had ranked at the top of the list in 2016, but tumbled to sixth place in the latest poll.

On Nov. 16, the Anholt-GfK Nation Brands Index released its annual findings after surveying people around the world. The survey measures "the power and quality of each country's 'brand image.'"

Germany topped the list for the first time since 2014. France came in second, followed by the UK, Canada and Japan. The U.S. ranked in sixth place after occupying the first or second slots since 2011, AdAge reports.

Independent British political consultant Simon Anholt and the German-based global market-research firm GfK established the Nation Brands Index in 2005. The survey queries people around the world about how they view a country's exports, governance, heritage, immigration, people and tourism.

"The Nation Brands Index allows our clients to understand where -- and why -- their nation stands in terms of their current image, momentum and potential," said GfK Senior Vice President Vadim Volos, according to The Financial.

Anholt attributed America's fall in the list to the global perception of U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that the world's view of U.S. governance had dropped from 19th to 23rd place.

"The USA's fall in the 'Governance' category suggests that we are witnessing a 'Trump effect', following President Trump's focused political message of 'America First'," Anholt said in a statement. "However, Americans' assessment of their own country is notably more positive this year than last."

Anholt added that the U.S. had regained its global standing in the BMI before.

"A similar fall in global perception of the USA was seen following the re-election of George W. Bush, when the USA fell to seventh place," Anholt said. "Previously, America has never stayed outside the top ranking for more than a year at a time: it will be interesting to see whether this holds true in the 2018 ranking.”

Germany received high marks in every BMI category except for tourism.

"Germany, by contrast to the USA, enjoys a very balanced image across all six categories of the index, with notable improvements in global perception of its culture, governance, and people," the BMI report stated, according to Politico.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel released a statement asserting that his country had taken a leadership role in global affairs.

"Germany's image no longer rests on our economic strength," Gabriel said, according to DW. "People think we're capable of much in the world."
