Karen Hale, 52, was arrested after she broke into an elderly couple’s home and got into an altercation with the couple in their bedroom.
The wife reportedly spotted Hale and screamed for her 77-year-old husband, who began to physically wrestle with Hale. The two ended up in the kitchen where Hale grabbed an 8-inch kitchen knife and tried to stab the victim. The 77-year-old man allegedly punched Hale twice, according to the Plymouth Herald.
Hale was arrested at her home in Plymouth in Devon, in the U.K., according to the Mirror. Hale pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 months for the burglary and nine months for breaching a suspended sentence, to run consecutively.
Hale initially pleaded not guilty and claimed that the elderly man forced her into his home and attempted to attack her.
During sentencing, the elderly woman gave a victim impact statement and stated she has, “never been so paranoid in my own home, especially when it's dark outside,” adding she is now, “paranoid about locking all the doors and windows.”
In Hale’s defense, mitigation advocate Jason Rose, said Hale was "heavily medicated" and suffered chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as reported by the Mirror.
Det. Con Luke Minett, lead investigator assigned to the case, said after the sentencing, “The elderly couple are delighted with the sentence imposed. As victims they are very satisfied with the outcome.
“Ultimately a dangerous offender is now in prison," he added, "and hopefully this will bring some closure to the victims and they can now move on.”
While sentencing Hale, Recorder Williams said: “It must have been the most absolutely frightening thing [for the couple] to find someone in their home. The gentleman confronted you while police were called. You got hold of a knife and attempted to stab him,” The Universal Free Press reports.
