A father in England was sentenced to life in prison for beating his 4-year-old daughter to death.
Carl Wheatley, a 31-year-old father from Hertfordshire, England, was awarded custody of his daughter, Alexa-Marie Quinn, last year after the young girl was removed from her mother’s custody and placed in foster care.
Three months after winning custody of Quinn, Wheatley beat his daughter with “hard, sustained, persistent hitting,” which ultimately led to her death from “extreme blunt-force trauma.”
Doctors determined that the death was the result of weeks of similar beatings that led to fat deposits entering Quinn’s bloodstream and her lungs being blocked. Her body was discovered on March 12, 2014.
Wheatley, who had been diagnosed with several mental disorders, including ADHD, admitted to manslaughter but entered a plea of not guilty on “the grounds of diminished responsibility,” according to BBC. He was given a life sentence.
“You were very aware of what you were doing to that little girl,” Judge Andrew Bright said. “You kept her indoors and out of sight, so others didn’t see the injuries you had caused. Your repeated assaults on her were to such an extent that they can only be described as acts of sadistic violence by the end of that period.”
