Ex-Congressman Warns: 'We Are In WWIII' (Video)

Former Republican Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia has said the global threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) and other Islamic extremist terror groups is plunging the world into World War III.

On April 6, Wolf participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Family Research Council. Joined by officials dedicated to promoting religious freedom, the panel discussed how to combat global violence motivated by Islamic extremism, the Christian Post reports.

After one panelist said Islamic extremism is a threat to Christians, Muslims and religious minorities across the globe, Wolf interjected that it was a worldwide crisis.

"I agree with the pope, we are in World War III," Wolf said, according to the Christian Post.

In September 2015, Pope Francis had warned that terrorism and genocides committed across the globe qualified as a world war, according to the BBC.

"Even today, after the second failure of another world war, perhaps one can speak of a third war, one fought piecemeal, with crimes, massacres, destruction," Pope Francis said at the time.

Wolf agreed with this assessment, elaborating that there is connective tissue among the terrorist groups waging attacks across different continents.

"There is a connection between Boko Haram,” Wolf said, referring to the Nigeria-based terrorist group. “They pledged to ISIS. There is a connection to al-Shabaab in Somalia. There is a connection with what's taking place in Libya. We saw what took place in France. We saw what took place in San Bernardino. We are in World War III.”

The former congressman proceeded to criticize President Barack Obama and Congress’ efforts to combat terrorist groups such as ISIS.

"We just don’t have a leader like we had in President Reagan or in Winston Churchill or in President Kennedy or in President Truman," he said, according to the Christian Post. " … We are in World War III and Congress and the administration is going to have to deal with it or else very bad things are going to happen in the world,” Wolf added.

Obama has been adamant that the U.S. is on track to degrade and destroy ISIS.

On April 5, the President noted during a meeting with military officials that U.S.-led airstrikes targeting ISIS leaders and supply lines have put pressure on the terrorist group, adding that their infrastructure was deteriorating as a result, NDTV reports.

"Destroying ISIS continues to be my top priority," Obama said.
