An Etihad Airways pilot reportedly delayed a flight that was about to depart after two passengers received a text informing them that their grandson was dying.
The unnamed couple were on a plane headed to Australia from Manchester Airport in England when they got the news that their grandson was in intensive care, according to Yahoo News. They then immediately let the cabin crew know about their situation, and once the pilot heard, he turned the plane around on the runway and allowed the elderly couple to get off the plane.
Etihad Airways staff also arranged to have the couple's car ready for them as soon as they got their luggage so they could get to the hospital quickly.
The couple was able to get to the hospital in time to be with their grandson during his final hours. The next day, he died. The cause of death as not been reported.
The couple's travel agent, Becky Stephenson, shared the story on the Travel Gossip Facebook page, and it has since gone viral.
"I only heard about what had happened this week because I was away on an educational," Stephenson wrote in the Facebook post, according to Yahoo. "I sent a message to Etihad’s sales manager to praise the staff and popped what had happened on Travel Gossip [a Facebook page], but I had no idea it would get so many likes and comments. It was such a sad thing that happened to my clients, but it was lovely that Etihad was able to help in the way they did.
"They were on their way to Abu Dhabi so if they hadn’t been able to get off the plane they may not have made it back in time. I contacted them to give my condolences and they said they were going to contact Etihad as well.
"[Every] little thing you could think of, they took care of. Sadly my customers’ grandson passed away the day after but had they not been allowed off the flight and had to fly back from Abu Dhabi they may not have made it to his bedside.”
