Canadian Christian Bus Driver Will Quit Job Before Driving Rainbow Flag Bus

Jesse Rau, a Canadian bus driver in Calgary, Alberta, is threatening to quit his job if he is required to drive a bus that has a pro-gay rainbow flag painted on it.

A Calgary Transit bus has been painted with the flag's colors in conjunction with the annual Calgary Pride Festival, which begins today and goes until Sept. 7.

Pride Calgary, which is sponsoring the event, posted a picture of the bus with the caption: "#RideWithPride on the Rainbow Pride Bus for #YYCPride - Thx @CalgaryTransit & @PattisonOutdoor 4 the support!"

Rau, who self-identifies as a Christian, says he can’t support homosexuality and is hoping he and other like-minded bus drivers gain support from Calgary Transit and a transit union.

However, Doug Morgan, who is the director of Calgary Transit, told the National Post:

What we would do is open a dialogue with them and chat with them and ask them about their issues and making sure we’re being sensitive to their beliefs, but overall the service has to go out and we would ask them to drive the bus.

Rau countered:

I have a family to support and I am very concerned about losing the job, it’s something I’m very proud to be a part of, but when it goes against the most important things I stand for, or if I’m asked to compromise in such a big way for what I believe to be right, then I have to lose my job.

I’m a Christian so, as a Christian, there are things like homosexuality that I just can’t condone. Unfortunately, we live in a culture where if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, the accusation is that you hate the person.
