A 25-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend in Kalachowkie, India, on Sunday, according to the Hindustan Times.
Prasad Sawant, 26, and Ekta Talwadkar had been together for 11 years before he reportedly slit her throat.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m., and Sawant later turned himself in to Kalachowkie police, according to NDTV.
A murder case has been opened, and police are still investigating the motive behind his actions.
“The two were having an affair for 11 years, but the woman’s parents were opposed to it, “ Ashok Dudhe, deputy commissioner of Zone IV police, said to the Hindustan Times. "This may have led to the murder. We are investigating the reason for the accused taking such a drastic step."
Some media outlets describe the couple as “star-crossed,” resorting to a suicide pact after Talwadkar’s parents disapproved of her plans to marry Sawant.
“Prasad said they were planning to commit suicide, but he slit her throat with a sharp knife," Kalachowkie Police Inspector Suryakant Tarade told NDTV. "Ekta was taken to KEM Hospital, where she was declared dead."
Sawant has been described as an alcoholic, and was reportedly under the influence of alcohol during the incident.
The news of Talwadkar’s death has deeply affected her family.
“Ekta’s father is in shock; he keeps saying he wishes he was dead as well,” Talwadkar’s uncle said.
"I was opposed to their marriage, as I never liked him," Talwadkar’s father said.
Sawant is due to appear in court on Monday.
