A 39-year-old French beekeeper has reportedly trained his bees to make "cannahoney." A video (below) of Nicolas, also known as Nicolas Trainerbees, posted on the NowThis Weed Facebook page in March has garnered over 22 million views as of May 10.
"I have trained bees to do several things, such as collect sugar from fruits, instead of using flowers," Nicolas told DINAFEM in February.
Nicolas said the "cannahoney" is created by a "training technique whereby the bees collect the resin [nectar from cannabis plants] and use it in the beehive."
Nicolas said when he was a child, he was hyperactive and deemed "unsuitable" by France's education system; as a result, he left school. He later found that marijuana helped him to deal with his hyperactivity: "I began consuming before the age of 10."
"For some time I had known about the health benefits of bee products such as honey, propolis, pollen, wax and royal jelly and also about the benefits of cannabis," Nicolas added.
According to Nicolas, "everything that passes through the body of a bee is improved."
"So if the bee took the resin from cannabis it would also be very beneficial," Nicolas explained. "The aim arose for me to get the bees to obtain this resin."
Nicolas began this mission in 2006 and started seeing results in 2013.
Nicolas said the "cannahoney" substance "is not smoked, it is ingested and it is good for health."
Nicolas added that "the bees accept any strain," and "[t]he bees that produce the cannahoney are not affected by cannabinoids because they do not have an endocannabinoid system."
In other words, the bees don't get high.
Nicolas owns 30 beehives, but because of French laws he has to grow his marijuana far from home. He reportedly risks arrest every time he transports his marijuana plants close to the hives for pollination.
Nicolas said he plans to leave France for Spain to medicate his hyperactivity legally, work with more freedom, and gain interest from professionals.
There were some skeptical commenters on the NowThis Weed Facebook page under the video about Nicolas:
"This is a very misleading article, you categorically CANNOT get Bees to make weed honey! It is simply honey INFUSED with weed. Stop being like the mainstream media for weeds sake!"
"I'm laughing big time... I raise bees and grow pot... they do not get nectar for honey from a female plant...! They will however collect from the male flowers, or your herms but no honey comes from bud... do your research on the forms [and] types of flowers are for food for the hive and honey nectar... And those that say you can get high off a male plant (hemp), get off the Crack...!"
