Complaints About Dog Lead To Coma, Prison (Photos)

An ex-con will be back in prison after instituting a "deliberate, severe, and merciless" assault that put his disabled neighbor into a coma.

Raymond Burrell from Cardiff, England, brutally attacked his neighbor, which caused 34-year-old Matthew Sheehan to suffer a coma that has endured for more than seven months.

The cause of the dispute was Burrell’s Staffordshire bull terrier.

Burrell’s beloved dog often barked late at night. On Sept. 1, 2015, he became "annoyed" at Matthew’s complaints and brutally attacked him.

"The day Matthew was attacked will forever be etched in our memories," said Martin Sheehan, Matthew’s father.

Neighbors reported hearing several disturbances from Matthew’s home, such as screaming, shouting, and noises that suggested someone having been kicked.

"It is difficult for us to understand how someone could inflict such horrific injuries on another person, more so, on a vulnerable person who can’t even defend themselves," the family wrote in a statement.

Matthew’s injuries included eye laceration, bruising to the brain, and various facial injuries. The 34-year-old, who had a tremor and required the use of a walking stick, was left in a coma.

"He will be completely reliant on medical care for many years to come which means he can't do anything himself," Martin continued.

During Burrell’s sentencing at Swansea Crown Court, Judge Paul Thomas detailed the events that stemmed from the suspect’s irritation over a "minor event" and led to Matthew’s "mental death."

"You left him in a pool of his own blood, but returned," Thomas stated. "Your intention was to make sure he was never able to say what happened to him by your hands and feet. You were indifferent whether he lived or died as long as he couldn't tell anyone what happened. Your volcanic temper shows that when you lose it you lose all semblance of human restraint."

"The sentence passed today indicates the severity of the unprovoked attack on Matthew and the sheer disregard Burrell had for anyone else other than himself," stated Detective Inspector Ian Bourne of the South Wales Police, as reported by ITV. "The dignity and bravery of the Sheehan family through their continuing ordeal has been truly humbling, and they and Matthew continue to live with their own life sentence."

Burrell has been sentenced to life behind bars for causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He had already served seven years for shooting his girlfriend in the heart in 1993.
