Spanish customs officials found something unusual in a shipment of pineapples from Central America: 440 pounds of cocaine.
Officials discovered the shipment of 12 containers after it arrived in the southern port of Algeciras, according to an Interior Ministry statement. The shipment included thousands of hollowed out pineapples filled with drugs and covered with yellow wax to imitate the color of pineapple pulp.
The containers were addressed to one company in Madrid and another in Sant Quirze del Valles near Barcelona. Both businesses are reportedly owned by Spanish nationals of Colombian origin.
