A case of extreme jealousy resulted in the death of an 18-year-old South African girl who was allegedly set on fire last week by her boyfriend’s bitter ex-girlfriend.
The body of the Grade 12 student, Boitumelo Dlamini, was found charred in a field in Klipgat, North West, on June 25.
Four suspects, including her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend, have been arrested for the crime.
The Elepsa Secondary School student is believed to have been kidnapped Thursday by the ex-girlfriend of Tokelo Makalepho and three of her friends. Dlamini had been dating Makalepho, 24, for the six months leading up to the fatal crime.
Dlamini’s sister, Nono, says Makalepho’s ex-girlfriend had repeatedly threatened Dlamini since the two started dating.
"She constantly intimidated my sister and threatened her,” Nono said. “My sister died because she was beautiful and doing matric.”
According to Pulse.ng, the angry ex-girlfriend organized her friends to kidnap and kill Dlamini. Reports say the suspects took Dlamini into a car after school and drove to a bush where they doused the teen in petrol. The 18-year-old was then set on fire and burned to death.
“We got worried when she did not return home,” Nono said. “Later we received a call to say she was dead.”
All four suspects are now facing charges for murder and kidnapping.
Makalepho told police that his ex, the mother of his 19-month-old daughter, would only accept their break-up if he promised to date ugly women who already had children.
According Nigeria Daily News, Makalepho claims his ex also told him that any new girlfriend of his must not have a matric certificate, South Africa's equivalent of a high-school diploma.
“She was angry that I dumped her with a baby,” Makalepho said. “I never thought she can do this. I’m traumatized.”
North West police spokesman Captain Paul Ramaloko confirmed that four arrests had been made in regards to the case. The suspects were scheduled to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
