Until the end of September, millions of people will have access to free Wi-Fi at over 4,000 hotspots, thanks to Google Play. Google Play teamed up with Boingo Wireless to offer the free Wi-Fi, which is part of Boingo’s Cloud Nine Media platform.
The platform is an advertising network that allows brands to reach a large audience through Wi-Fi sponsorships.
Google Play’s Wi-Fi sponsorship will begin this week, and will allow users with Android, Windows, and Macintosh devices to connect to free Internet in thousands of populated locations.
Those included on the list of free Wi-Fi hotspots are 15 airports, including New York’s John F. Kennedy, Chicago O’Hare, and Seattle-Tacoma. Other areas include Manhattan subway stations, thousands of hotels, shopping malls, cafes, and recreational areas.
Once consumers connect to the Wi-Fi, they will be able to check out Google Play’s free content, look up the latest releases, and entertain themselves with music, movies, books, apps, and more.
Dawn Callahan, vice president of consumer marketing for Boingo Wireless, said Google Play is the first to take advantage of their newly expanded Wi-Fi network. The network can reach millions of consumers each month with “place-based brand engagements.”
“Sponsorships like this give users the free Wi-Fi they crave, advertisers the consumer interaction they need, and venues the revenue to offset the costs associated with providing a high-bandwidth Wi-Fi experience,” Callahan said.
