An Iowa family got an unexpected surprise a few days before Christmas when a stranger paid for their $211 Walmart bill at the checkout as a random act of kindness.
Ruby Modlin was grocery shopping at Walmart with her grandchildren when she noticed a stranger following her around the store. But, she just assumed the man was an acquaintance from high school.
“I kept noticing this man, and I’d smile at him,” Modlin said to KCCI news in Iowa.
Then, when Modlin reached the checkout stand and right before her husband was about to pay their bill, the man stepped in front of them and swiped his credit card.
"I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘I’m paying for this.’ I said, ‘No, you’re not.’ He said, 'Yes, I am,’” Modlin told KCCI.
The man then pointed to his wife and daughter and told Modlin that they had wanted to do something nice for a stranger, and that they picked her. The man then wished the Modlins “Merry Christmas,” and left the store.
Modlin was especially touched by the gesture because she has been in and out of the hospital due to liver failure for the past few months.
I just want to thank them. I don't know who they are, but I hope they see this. And from my husband, and granddaughter and me, we just want to thank them," Modlin said.
