The future of warfare is here -- the Navy is testing a new supersonic weapon that fires missiles that travel seven times faster than the speed of sound and can targets 100 miles away.

The Daily Mail reports it uses a magnetic field and electric current instead of chemicals to generate the energy to fire its rounds.

The Navy confirms it is testing the weapon at its Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division in Virginia.

There is stiill much work to be done, including making sure the missile does not disintigrate at such high speeds and working to cool down the gun so it can fire multiple times.

It is slated to be on warships by 2017.
