"Ugly" People Mistakenly Approved for BeautifulPeople.com

BeautifulPeople.com is a social networking site that, as its name suggests, is only for beautiful people. The site has a system where users vote on whether a prospective new member is good looking enough to join their hallowed ranks. Well, a computer virus allowed thousands of "ugly" people to join.

''We got suspicious when tens of thousands of new members were accepted over a six-week period, many of whom were no oil painting,'' site managing director Greg Hodge not-so-diplomatically said.

Hodge said the site then repaired the damage done by the "Shrek" virus, and put those new members through the rigorous screening process.

"The result is that we have lost over 30,000 recent members," said Hodge. ''We have sincere regret for the unfortunate people who were wrongly admitted to the site and who believed, albeit for a short while, that they were beautiful.''

The site first thought the virus was planted by one of the 5.5 million people who the site rejected. But further investigation points to a former employee.

BeautifulPeople.com has more than 700,000 members worldwide. Just one in seven applicants is accepted.

The site says the majority of new members come from the United States, Denmark and France. On the other side of the coin, the United Kingdom, Russia and Poland have the most rejections.
