A Massachusetts-based company hopes to develop the best home security system by combining alarms and smart lighting.
BeON Burglar Deterrent is a set of LED-lightbulbs that learns your home’s lighting patterns and then replicates them when you are away, creating the illusion that someone is still home.
According to TechCrunch, BeON lightbulbs install just like regular lightbulbs, including working with your existing wall switches, but with an additional “smart” module, they introduce a degree of intelligence.
BeON bulbs can detect the sound of your doorbell so that they switch on in sequence.
As The Blaze notes, for example, the smart lightbulbs could turn on the lights in your bedroom first, followed by the lights in the hallway, stairway and downstairs. The goal is to create the impression that someone is always home and hopefully deter would-be burglars.
BeON also has backup rechargeable batteries to keep the lights on during power outages.
BeON Stress Free Home Security launched a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter to develop the lightbulbs and has raised more than $55,000 as of this writing.
BeON bulbs can also detect a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm and turn on to full brightness to help you get to safety.
The smart lights, which are long-lasting and energy-efficient, can also be switched on and off using an app on your smartphone.
The Cambridge-based company expects to present its bulbs to backers in April 2015 if it can raise $100,000 by December 19, TechHive reports.
“We think people want products that solve problems, versus investing in platforms,” BeOn CEO Alexei Erchak told the website. “We wanted to approach home security the way the experts do, in layers. But we didn’t want to be just another video camera, or a motion sensor, or an alarm. Once an alarm sounds, the break-in has already happened; the emotional trauma is already there. The best home security starts before the break-in. So we embraced an unloved space—the security deterrent.”
