When the iPad came out earlier this month, conventional wisdom was that is would eventually take down the Kindle as the best-selling e-book reader. Well, something else beat the iPad to the punch -- the Nook.
The Barnes & Noble device surpassed Amazon's Kindle in sales in March. according to a report on Digitimes. It says 53% of the e-book readers shipped in March were Nooks. Digitimes Research senior analyst Mingchi Kuo attributes this to consumers' interest in new products. The Nook came out late last year, while the Kindle has been on the market for some time now.
But the Kindle should soon get a boost -- Amazon has started selling them in Target stores. Previously, it was only available online. Nooks are for sale at Barnes & Noble stores, as well as Best Buy.
The e-book reader market is exploding. It's estimated that more than 11 million of them will be sold this year, compared to 3.8 million in 2009.
