A 13-year-old girl has reportedly committed suicide after her mother told her that she was wasting her time browsing on Facebook.
According to reports, Aditi Gupta was on Facebook one day when her mother, 36-year-old Mohana Gupta, told her that she didn’t want her using the website anymore.
“I want that Facebook account closed by the time I come home,” said Mohana allegedly told her daughter.
Hours later, the mother returned home to find that her young daughter had hanged herself. She immediately called police, and during her questioning, she said she never thought her daughter would end her own life, especially over “something so trivial.”
“I told her she was too young to be on Facebook and wasting her time,” said Mohana Gupta to police. “I generally leave for work around 9.30am. But my husband left early and my older son was at his grandmother’s house for the holidays. When I was about to leave, my daughter was sitting in front of the computer. I was angry because she was spending a lot of time on social networking.”
As The Inquisitr points out, this is not the first time that a teen in India has committed suicide over a Facebook ban. Back in 2013, a teenage girl had argued with her parents over the use of Facebook and the Internet, and out of anger, hanged herself in her bedroom.
The investigation into the most recent Faceboook-related suicide is ongoing, and the story has sparked a debate in India and around the world over modern day parenting.
