Last night, the baseball world, make that the entire sports world, should’ve taken a few minutes to watch what transpired in the Bronx.
With 2 outs in the 9th inning, Mariano Rivera walked off the mound at Yankees Stadium for the last time.
No one was focused on the fact that the Yankees were not in playoff contention, no one cared that the Yankees were losing 4-0, and certainly no one cared how long the game would be delayed.
This night was about Mariano Rivera.
In fact, words do not do justice for the moment that Rivera and his longtime teammates Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter shared. So, instead of boring you with all the stats and trying to put into words what Rivera meant to the Yankees organization, just take a look:
If you can watch that without getting chill bumps, you are doing something wrong.
It is not shown in the clip above, but when watching live you could see Jeter mouthing “it’s time to go!” as he made his way to the mound…and as sad as it was, I couldn’t imagine a better way for ‘Mo’ to go.
