If the Golden State Warriors are truly interested in having Kevin Love join the team next season, they need to act quickly. Love will become a free agent at the end of next season, and the Minnesota Timberwolves would like to trade Love away rather than watch him walk away in free agency.
In order to obtain Love, Klay Thompson has been mentioned as a key part of a potential trade. However, the Warriors will not include Klay Thompson in a deal. They are currently working on a plan to trade for Love and keep Thompson in Northern California.
Instead of Thompson, the Warriors would have to send some combination of David Lee, Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala to Minnesota. Bogut’s injury history could be a turn off for the Timberwolves, making Lee and Iguodala the primary pieces to trade away.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are also a potential problem for the Warriors in getting Love. Now that the Cavs have LeBron James back, Kevin Love is their newest priority. Further, reports state that Love is interested in playing for the Cavs next season. Undoubtedly, the idea of playing with James is a big reason Love is willing to play in Cleveland.
Hypothetically, if the Warriors were able to trade for Love and keep Thompson, the real trouble lies ahead in the summer of 2015. Both Love and Thompson would be unrestricted free agents. Thompson’s success with Golden State means he will have to be paid a larger contract. After watching Gordon Hayward earn a maximum contract this offseason, Thompson may demand the same payment. Likewise, Kevin Love will surely require a maximum contract from wherever he decides to sign for the 2015-2016 season.
If the Warriors are unable to make enough room to sign the two players, one will probably leave for a new team after next season. Although Thompson’s upside is still quite high, Love’s past accomplishments probably make him the more valuable choice between the two. Golden State fans may be disappointed if they lose Thompson, as the backcourt of Thompson and Stephen Curry was believed to be the future of the team.
If the Warriors are planning on putting Love and Thompson on the floor together next year, then any action they take this offseason will have to be done with the future in mind.
