Being a tennis line judge is about as thankless a job as you’ll ever come across. No matter what happens, you lose.
When you get a call right, someone tells you that you’re an idiot and that you got it wrong. When you get a call wrong, everyone tells you that you’re an idiot and you quickly become an embarrassment to your family.
And on the rare occasions when you’re not lambasted for making a call one way or the other, something like this happens:
That’s right, a 118 m.p.h. ball to the face – that’s the thank you that one poor line judge got for her hard work during Monday’s fourth-round Wimbeldon showdown between Mardy Fish and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
It's not all bad news, though.
What was the good news? Well, that judge made the right call on the ball before getting smacked in the face with the equivalent of a brick. Gotta look for the silver lining wherever you can find it.
