Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. vs. Jorge Arce: Round-by-Round Results, Analysis

It's co-feature time on the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley card from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Former champion Jorge Arce brings his own brand of flair to the ring to challenge Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in a super bantamweight title fight.

The tale of the tape shows that Vazquez is slightly taller but the two men are pretty much even in all other physical attributes.

Vazquez is 20-0-1 with 17 KOs and is making his third defense of the WBO super bantamweight belt. Arce is 56-6-2 and is 4-0-1 in his past five bouts.

Joe Cortez is the referee for this bout. Jimmy Lennon Jr. does the introductions and we are all set to go.

Round 1

Both men are very light on their feet. Arce tests some jabs before barging in. Vazquez fights off the ropes and lands an uppercut. Good left hook by Arce and Vazquez tries to answer with a flurry. Arce goes very low to the body. Straight right by Vazquez is answered by a sharp left hook by Arce. Jorge lands a right and backs up the champ. They trade shots along the rope with both men landing. Arce lets his hands go in the closing seconds.

Round 2

No hesitation here as both men look to throw as soon as they hear the bell. Arce bashes his way forward with another low body shot and a left hook to the head. Vazquez is just a hair off with his right hands, but he is landing some. Wilfredo circles around to land a right hand and Arce waves him in. Left hook by Arce and two more right hands follow. They stand head to head and wing shots. Joe Cortez breaks them several times in the corner.

Round 3

There's an early clash of heads and the two men touch gloves. Vazquez tries to keep Arce at bay with his jab. Right hand by Wilfredo but Jorge walks through it. Arce may be bleeding a bit from the nose. Great action in the corner as Vazquez turns his man around and lands several power shots. Arce throws a combination with multiple punches finding the mark. He's really attacking the body too.

Round 4

Both men are willing to brawl at close range. Arce's left hook has been a consistent weapon. He's also a little craftier when they are in very tight. Vazquez tries to load up a right hand. He moves laterally in both directions. Vazquez's uppercut is answered by a flurry of punches. Vazquez fires back too of his own and slips to the mat. More good stuff in the middle of the ring as shots land in both directions. Vazquez nails a left hook and Arce goes down. He's back up before the ten count just before the bell.

Round 5

Arce certainly isn't letting on that he's hurt as he plays the aggressor again. Arce throws another combination that makes Vazquez slip down again. Vazquez corners his man and tries to zero in with the right. Arce responds with hooks to the body. Vazquez strafes Arce with his own left hooks and Jorge winces a bit. Solid shots connect from both men right before Arce misses two wild swings.

Round 6

Arce isn't taking his foot off the gas as we hit the midway point. His body shots are still thudding. He leaps in for a left hand and gets tied up. More head shots from Arce and a rare body blow from Vazquez. The champ pivots around and looks for right hands. There's a solid right by Vazquez that is answered in kind. Left hook to the body by Arce.

Round 7

Vazquez looks to counter and control the range. Arce hops in and eats a right hand. Vazquez comes forward and initiates the action in close. Here come wild swings from both fighters. Arce turns it around and leans in for right hands. Arce keeps working but gets himself off balance. He lands a right hand and a one-two after it. They stand and trade again with Vazquez barely getting the better of it.

Round 8

A counter left catches Arce coming in. Arce simply keeps coming forward. Cortez stays busy breaking up clinches. More two-way action with Vazquez landing the cleaner shots. Arce is averaging over 70 punches a round, but Vazquez has been more accurate. There's a brief lull as Vazquez circles. Pot shots from the champ and a left hook in the closing moments.

Round 9

Left hooks by Vazquez, making Arce have to leap in to land his punches. Vazquez goes down along the ropes but it is correctly ruled a slip. Arce tries to keep the pace high. Vazquez fires an uppercut between his foe's shots. Vazquez scores again with a left hook. Cortez is unhappy with the repeated holding. They jockey for position with their heads very close together. Vazquez pikcs his spots late.

Round 10

Arce eats two quick shots before a clinch. Arce bulls his way forward, leading with his head. Cortez is keeping himself busy. Vazquez lands a nasty uppercut followed by a hook. Vazquez trips over Arce and slips to the canvas again. Arce leans on his man but can't get his hands free. Short right by Vazquez and a lot more wrestling. Neither man can find a consistent groove at the moment. Arce lands a combo right before the round ends.

Round 11

Arce just wills his way forward, landing left hooks and a right hand to the head. Vazquez fights his way off the ropes and ends up along the opposite side. Hooks crash home for both men. Vazquez appears a bit stunned after a stiff left, and Arce tries to pour it on. Arce is on Vazquez like an animal, and Vazquez slips down. He looks legitimately wobbly though. Arce has turned it into a messy brawl, and that's just the way he likes it.

Round 12

Arce lands some early shots and Vazquez is in big trouble along the ropes. Vazquez looks glassy-eyed, and his corner throws in the towel. Antonio Tarver is surprised that Vazquez Sr. wanted it stopped, as Vazquez looked like he wasn't quite out of it.

The commentators continue to debate whether the fight needed to be stopped. It was a tough call because Vazquez was definitely getting battered but was also trying to throw back.

The winner by TKO at 0:55 of Round 12... and new WBO junior featherweight titleholder... Jorge Arce.
