The Rutgers Scarlet Knights currently have seventeen alumni on NFL rosters (and some impressive names too), but if you saw Rutgers play for the first time this year you would never believe it.
Rutgers sputtered again last week, falling 40-13 to Louisville. It was their fifth consecutive loss since defensive end Eric LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury in a 23-20 overtime win against Army on Oct. 16.
It wasn't long ago that Rutgers Head Coach, Greg Schiano, was known as a recruiting guru, a great motivator and rumored to be a candidate for some of the best jobs in the land. Not anymore. This is getting downright ugly!
People used to compare the Rutgers football program to the UConn football program because they are fighting for the media headlines and major college football fan base in the tri-state metropolitan area. If the Connecticut Huskies beat the South Florida Bulls Saturday night, they will have stormed back from a 3-4 start and will represent the Big East in a BCS Bowl game! I don't hear anyone making that comparison anymore.
The West Virginia Mountaineers (23) are 31-4-2 all-time against Rutgers, winning all 16 meetings in Morgantown and have won the last 15 matchups overall. The last two games have been decided by seven or fewer points, including a 24-21 over Rutgers victory last December.
Don't expect this game to be anything like the last two as the Rutgers defense is entering this matchup with major struggles, allowing 1,088 total yards and giving up 109 points over the last two games. West Virginia is favored by 20.5 points and anything less than 21 seem like a gift to me. Take West Virgina and lay the 20.5.
BTW - Remember November 9, 2006 when the Scarlet Knights stunned then No. 3 Louisville 28-25 on a Thursday night nationally televised game in front of a sellout crowd? Wow does that seem like a lifetime ago.
