The San Diego Chargers probably would have beaten the Oakland Raiders no matter what on Monday night, so it’s great that Travis Goethel was around to give the losing squad a really solid scapegoat.
During what would ultimately end up being a 22-14 San Diego victory, Goethel -- who came in when long snapper Jon Condo left with a head injury -- managed to botch two snaps in embarrassing fashion, and then stood by idly as a punt got blocked.
It was horrible in every which way.
After the game, Raiders coach Dennis Allen acknowledged that Goethel’s shoddy play did matter.
"He's worked on snapping the ball, and actually he's done a nice job in practice, but it's obviously a lot different when you get in a game-like situation," Allen said. "He was put into a tough situation, and it hurt us."
