Surfing legend Garrett McNamara appears to have set a new world record for the biggest wave ever ridden, around 100 feet, off the coast of Nazare, Portugal, reports the Daily Mail (video below).
If the claims are verified, the U.S. athlete will have broken his own record, riding a 78-foot wave in 2011, which was confirmed by a panel of experts at the annual Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards.
McNamara could have been slammed into a reef or the ocean floor if he had wiped out on the 100-foot wave, yesterday.
Footage of McNamara, possibly breaking his own world record, was shot by surfing photographer To Mane.
McNamara later tweeted: “Thank you for all your support. It means the world to me. Today was an awesome day and so fun to be out there."
