The term ‘heat check’ is often used in sports to describe an athlete realizing that they’re on fire at a specific moment, and then checking just how much of a roll they’re actually on. That had to be what Phil Mickelson was doing on Friday at the 15th hole of the Northern Trust Open when he knocked a shot into a guy’s shorts.
Yes, you read that correctly: he hit a ball into a guy’s shorts.
Fortunately, everything worked out in the end for all involved. Mickelson didn’t kill the fan like he originally thought he had (“I thought I had taken him out,” he would say later), and the fan in question got a signed Mickelson glove. Win-win.
