The Los Angeles Lakers suffered their sixth preseason loss of the year on Sunday night when they fell to the Sacramento Kings 99-92. Has a team ever before looked so good in defeat?
This outing was huge for a pretty obvious reason: Dwight Howard’s debut in purple and gold. How did the big man look? Solid. His timing was noticeably off on certain plays and he clearly didn’t have the same spring in his step we’re used to seeing, however, given his layoff, he looked really, really good.
When it was all said and done, Howard finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and four blocks. Not bad for a day’s work.
Kobe Bryant led the way for the Lakers with 21 points on six-of-12 shooting; Pau Gasol had 14 points and eight rebounds; Metta World Peace had 14 points, four rebounds and four steals.
The only notable concern right now? The bench. Still. Antawn Jamison finished scoreless on zero-of-three shooting; Devin Banks had four points on two-of-five shooting; Jodie Meeks finished with six points on two-of-two shooting from behind the arc.
Given how old half of this squad’s Big Four is, they can’t afford to have another season with absolutely nothing coming from the reserves.
