Video: Cowboys DeMarcus Ware, Miles Austin Team Up to Accomplish Something Special

This past summer, with the NFL lockout having recently ended, Cowboys teammates Miles Austin and DeMarcus Ware were anxious to get back on the field. But first, the pair took to the golf course to support Austin’s Family Foundation, a cause which means so much to both players.

While at Austin’s Golf Outing in Wayne New Jersey, in June, Ware talked exclusively to Class Act Sports, explaining why he wanted to help out Austin.

“It was a cancer event that I had and he did the same thing for me- he helped me out. It was a whole year later that I commented to his event. I know he is always out there doing a lot of things in the community, giving back as a star player. That’s what Miles is doing, and I am here to support him,” Ware said.

Then talking about the lockout, Ware had this to say to Class Act Sports:

“It’s been a long journey. We had a lot of ups and downs with the Cowboys, and then the lockout. And now you sort of get a little more rest and a little bit more of a glimpse of an opportunity to get ready for the next season. I think well be ready. I’m just ready for the season to start.”

Ware and the Cowboys started off the 2011 season with Super Bowl aspirations.  After some bumps along the road, they were 7-4 and controlled their own destiny in the NFC East. But Dallas then lost four of five, including two to the New York Giants to miss out on the playoffs for the second straight year. However, that couldn’t be blamed on Ware, who had 19.5 sacks this season, second in the league, or Austin, who was limited to just 10 games this past season with a hamstring injury, but still managed to catch seven touchdowns and amass 579 receiving yards.

In fact, both Austin and Ware were voted as two of the top 100 players in the league, something Ware was very proud of.

“When your peers vote you in as the top 100 players, that’s just the way they feel about you. Me, Miles, Tony Romo, guys that are on your team, just to be in the midst of playing with some of the great guys like that, and we have those leaders to lead us,” Ware told Class Act Sports.

When asked about his thoughts on being in that top 100 also, Austin took the opportunity to deflect the praise from him, and put it back on Ware for helping him out.

“I just want to thank [Ware], all the other guys who came out here to support. To have teammates that look after you like that is just a great thing. And him being a leader on our team, that just explains how much of a leader he is, to come out of his way from all of the way on the other side of the country to help me out for an outing for children in my town. It’s a big thing.”

Austin’s second-annual golf outing will be held on June 25, 2012, with all of the proceeds once again going to the Boys and Girls Club of Garfield, New Jersey, close to his hometown of Summit, New Jersey.
