The Carolina Panthers are in a full on freefall at this point. Putting Sunday’s 19-14 home loss to the Dallas Cowboys aside, this squad’s next three games will be against the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos. After that they’ll get a potential win in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, followed by three opponents in four weeks who are currently sitting at .500 or better.
There is absolutely no reason to think that things are on the verge of picking up for Carolina and, perhaps because of that, the team’s once beloved quarterback is now showing some very obvious signs of frustration.
“This taste, this vibe – I’m not buying it, man,” Cam Newton said after Sunday’s loss (via the Charlotte Observer). “And I don’t know what it is but something’s going to have to change. Something’s going to have to change real fast.”
And on the running game: “I’m not the play caller. ... When we run the football it hasn’t been exciting like we want it to be but you still have to call the plays. It’s kind of putting a strangle on our passing game.
Finally, on the team’s general strategy heading into games: “We’ve got to be more balanced, it’s evident, but the job’s got to get done…. We just find a way to keep the game close and just wait to see what happens at the end. I’m getting tired of it. That’s not a formula to win. Domination is a formula to win.”
The best comment of the day, however, came when a female reporter (the female part of the equation is key) asked him about where he and the squad go from here.
“I’m going to leave this room and I’m going to bring in a suggestion box and I want your suggestions to be in that suggestion box because I sure don’t know,” Newton said. “I really don’t. I wish I could tell you. But the only thing I control, sweetheart, is myself. Offensively, I am the leader of this bunch and we haven’t been getting the job done.”
That sweetheart bit will no doubt win Newton a lot of new fans.
