Who needs experience on a dirt surface?
Animal Kingdom, in front of a record crowd, separated himself from the pack with a champion-like spirit to capture the 137th Kentucky Derby on Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs. Originally given 20-1 odds, John Velazquez and Animal Kingdom were able to chase down Shackleford, who led most of the race, en route to eventual victory.
When it was all said and done, Animal Kingdom paid $43.80, $19.60 and $13 on a $2 bet.
Nehro and Mucho Macho Man finished in second and third places, respectively.
After thrilling event, the owner of Animal Kingdom, Barry Irwin, had this to say to NBC: "I can't believe it -- that's the headline. I'm just thrilled."
All in all, 164,858 people showed up to watch the most exciting two minutes in sports.
