Video: Amar’e Stoudemire Punches Glass After Heat vs. Knicks; Likely Out for Series

In what was undoubtedly one of the stupidest decisions in NBA postseason history, Amar’e Stoudemire put his fist through a glass fire extinguisher case following his team’s latest defeat to the Miami Heat on Monday night. Understandably frustrated about the New York Knicks’ 104-94 loss, Stoudemire -- who had 18 points on nine shots in the effort -- decided to act out in the worst way imaginable, and now he faces the very likely prospect of being forced to miss the rest of the series.

According to multiple reports, the lacerations on his left hand wound up being so bad that they left a pool of blood in the Knicks locker room and required immediate, serious medical attention from personnel on scene.

This is what the carpet in the locker room looked like after the fact (via Larry Brown Sports):

Ultimately, when all was said and done, this is what he looked like leaving the arena:

Having had some time to reflect on everything that transpired, Stoudemire eventually sent out these tweets:

I am so mad at myself right now, I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions, headed home for a new start

We all have done thing out of anger that we regret. That makes us human. Bad timing on my part. Sorry guys. This to shall pass.

This is a tough situation to tackle because, once you get past the sheer stupidity involved, you also have to acknowledge that this was a very human mistake on Stoudemire’s part. Everyone has done something they later wish they hadn't while angry, he’s right about that. It just so happens that the whole world is privy to it when Stoudemire or people of his ilk make their rage-fueled dumb decisions. So as bad as this whole thing was, almost everyone can sympathize.

On a grander scale, though – this could have turned out really badly for Stoudemire. People who get cut by glass often have nerve damage that they have to deal with for their rest of their lives. Permanent nerve damage. Seeing as this guy is signed to a $100-million deal largely because of the things he can do with his hands, what would happen if there is irreparable harm because of that punch?

It will definitely be interesting to see what the long-term ramifications of this fiasco will be.
