Edwin van der Sar was the man who solved a goalkeeping crisis that had plagued Manchester United since the retirement of the great Peter Schmeichel, despite the success the club enjoyed at times during the reign of bizarre goalkeeper Fabien Barthez.
However, with rumours that the Dutchman approaching retirement and signs he’s no longer at the top of his game following a high-profile error in the weekend’s game, the club cannot afford to go through a period during which they don’t have a first class goalkeeper at their disposal. If that happened, their football odds for winning the league would lengthen dramatically. So, it would seem that the pressure is firmly on Sir Alex Ferguson to make sure that he finds an ideal replacement at the first attempt.
Despite the fact that he has failed to do so in the past, Sir Alex has shown is capable of learning from his mistakes and, where possible, ensuring that they never happen again. However, if he is to successfully replace his current goalkeeper, he will require the help of the club’s owners.
If Ferguson does not receive the backing he requires in the transfer market, it will act as further proof that the club needs to oust its current owners, and fast. However, the manger is given big bucks to spend on a position so often called the most important on the pitch, then they may go some way to convincing the club’s fans that they have United’s best interests at heart.
Still, it’s unclear just who Sir Alex will move for, and the identity of Manchester United’s new number one may remain a mystery for a while yet.
Meanwhile, the Stoke betting suggests United will have an excellent chance of chalking up their first away league win of the season next weekend.
However, Ferguson will need to ensure his side keep things tight at the back if they are to pick up all three points.
