New USC Trojan Football Coach Lane Kiffin Grossly Overpaid?

The University of Southern California is treating the Kiffin family very well. Kiffin, hired away from Tennessee to coach the Trojans football team, is earning approximately $4 million per year according to YahooSports, despite a less-than-stellar coaching track record. His father, 70-year-old Monte Kiffin is said to be making “around $2 million” as an assistant coach.

Lane Kiffin, who spent one unsuccessful season with the Oakland Raiders before jumping to Tennessee last year -- and having an equally unsuccessful year -- received a huge salary boost from USC. The Trojans hope that Kiffin will fill the giant shoes of his predeccesor and new Seattle Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll.

Yet during the two seasons he spent coaching both Tennesee and the Raiders, Kiffin won a total of 12 games. To put things in perspective: The NFL season has 16 games, and the college football season --not including bowl games-- has 12 games. Out of a possible 28 games, Kiffin won less than 50 percent of the time.

None of that seems to matter much to USC, though. The good folks at Yahoo did the math, and with a $4 million per year salary, Kiffin is going to make $333,333 for each win of his professional coaching career. The salary is double that of his Tennessee pay, and it makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in all of college football. It also puts him in with such elite company as Mack Brown, Nick Saban and Urban Meyer, all of whom have had more wins per season than Kiffin has had in his entire career.

Monte Kiffin, who set records during his time at Tennessee for being the first “million-dollar assistant” in college football, saw his salary also double when he joined the Trojan family. Often called the mastermind of the Super Bowl-winning Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense, many have labeled him the real brains behind all of son Lane Kiffin’s operations.

It was reported last year that former USC coach, Carroll, earned $4.4 million per year after bringing seven straight Pac-10 titles and two national championships to USC.

How is Kiffin already at that pay grade?
