The recent smackdown on USC was clearly something that the school wasn’t thrilled about. And with Pat Haden taking over the A.D. job from Mike Garrett, it seems that one of the first order’s of business was to distance the school from former RB Reggie Bush. In an announcement about Haden’s hiring, the school said they have decided to return Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy to the Heisman Trophy Trust.
“The Trojan family honors and respects the USC sporting careers of those persons whose actions did not compromise their athletic program or the opportunities of future USC student-athletes,” Nikias said in a memo. “Accordingly, I have instructed the senior vice president for administration to remove athletic jerseys and murals displayed in recognition of (former basketball star) O.J. Mayo and Reggie Bush by mid-August — before the incoming class of students moves on campus — from Heritage Hall, the Galen Center and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The university also will return Mr. Bush’s 2005 Heisman Trophy to the Heisman Trophy Trust in August.”
It remains to be seen whether or not they will go ahead and take the trophy from Bush and hand it to Vince Young, but this isn’t a good sign for the overpaid New Orleans Saints running back.
