Coming off coaching the 14th season of the Ultimate fighter and a third round TKO victory over Jason “Mayhem” Miller, Michael Bisping returns to the Octagon on January 28th. His opponent will be the submission wizard Demian Maia and the two middleweight’s will clash on the UFC on FOX 2 main card.
Bisping (22-3) has now won four in a row following his TUF 14 finale win and despite his highlight reel knockout loss to Dan Henderson his only other defeats were to very close decisions. The cocky Englishman won season 3 of the Ultimate Fighter and has since posted an impressive 12-3 record between the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions.
Maia (15-3) is coming off a dominating unanimous decision victory over Jorge Santiago two months ago at UFC 136. The Brazilian started 5-0 (all submissions) in the UFC that included a win over Chael Sonnen but has had trouble stringing wins together since. His only defeats have come against top-level fighters Nate Marquardt, Anderson Silva and Mark Munoz.
This matchup is actually very similar to Bisping’s last fight against Miller as he was also a much stronger grappler then striker, like Maia. Bisping is not easy to takedown and as we saw last weekend is relentless with the striking. Maia has greatly improved his stand up since his loss to Silva but the submission game is still his strong point and his best chance to win.
UFC on FOX 2 will feature a triple-header of top fights live at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. Including the above mentioned fight, middleweight’s Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz will face off for a spot at Anderson Silva, plus light heavyweights Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will square off for a potential shot at the winner of Saturday’s 205 lbs. title fight between Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida at UFC 140.
Tickets for UFC on FOX 2 go on sale to the general public this Friday.
