For all of the talk about how Anthony Pettis is fighting in his hometown and despite continuous re-airings of his ridiculous cage kick, UFC 164 has flown under the radar a bit. Between Pettis initially being booked to fight Jose Aldo, Henderson being slated to take on T.J. Grant, both of those matches failing and tonight’s main event coming together, a dizzying series of events seem to have taken a bit of luster off what is arguably the best card the UFC has put together in 2013.
That being said, tonight’s events will answer a lot of questions. First and foremost: Is Anthony Pettis the real deal, or is he just a flashy ex-WEC lightweight champ who doesn’t stack up when you pit him against the UFC’s elite? Does Frank Mir have a legitimate claim to the title of best heavyweight submission artist of all time, or does that honor belong to Josh Barnett? Is Chad Mendes ready for another crack at Aldo?
We’ll find out the answer to those questions and more soon enough.
